But what exactly is it about matcha that has made it suddenly so popular? Perhaps it boils down to four things: flavour, convenience, possible health benefits and mysticism.

The Magic of Japanese Matcha Tea

First, the taste. Japanese matcha tea has a lovely mellow flavour without the bitter note that some people find challenging with other digestive teas. That makes it ideal for any time of day, from the breakfast pick-me-up through mid-morning and afternoon breaks to evenings when it can help to gently unwind.

Second, the ease of use. Japanese matcha tea comes in powder form, so you put some in a cup or pot of hot water and it's ready instantly. While other teas may get there quite quickly, many people like to allow them to brew for maximum flavour. With matcha, it's there right away.

Third, the possible health benefits. Matcha is high in antioxidants, with the fact that it is pulverized (powdered), increasing the concentrations of the beneficial components. It is grown mainly in the shade, which boosts its chlorophyll and amino acids content. It may help protect the liver, promote heart health, improve brain function and even potentially help with cancer prevention.

Fourth, the mystical side. While most of us don't know too much about Japanese tea ceremonies, we do get a sense of tranquillity and inspiration when we think of them. If an afternoon matcha-break can give us just a little of that in this hectic world, that's got to be good.
