Australia is an increasingly sophisticated country, and this is partly due to it being increasingly multicultural. The steady influx of other cultures, other ways of looking at things and different fields of expertise has broadened the national mind across the board, and the tea industry is no exception. That is why the very concept of premium tea has become a talking point.
Premium tea in Australia could be seen as what used to be called fancy tea. Tea drinkers here are more discerning than they used to be and that is what makes our role as suppliers to specialist shops so rewarding. It is a pleasure to be able to discuss our wares with people who are looking for high-quality tea. After all, we at Teavision have put a huge amount of effort into finding excellent products and bringing them into the country for the benefit of fellow tea lovers.
We have been all over the world seeking out the best tea leaves – and we continue to do so – so it is good to know there are kindred spirits here now who appreciate, for instance, premium green tea.
How Can You Tell if Tea is High Quality?
Perhaps the best way to look at this question is to put yourself in a particular tea’s country of origin, out there where it grows and is harvested. We partner with growers who have been cultivating tea for generations and who have moved with the times in terms of 21st-century attitudes to ethical matters such as good working conditions and inclusivity, as well as sound farming practices including sustainability.
These people are proud of what they produce and when their treasured crop is ready to be picked, they see each leaf as a labour of love. Those of us further down the line owe it to them to take our role seriously and ensure that the high quality that was there in the first place is maintained.
High quality tea looks good, feels good and smells great. Only an expert can describe in detail exactly what they are looking for but suffice it to say that what is considered premium tea is as impressive to the layperson as it is gratifying to the professional.
The Best Tea Leaves Make the Best Tea
That may sound like an obvious statement but the underlying truth bears repeating. The leaves that are carefully picked by hand are tea in its pristine original state. Everyone else in the chain owes it to the producer to make sure that fabulous flavour makes it to the cup in as faithful condition as possible. Premium tea, be that premium green tea, black tea or one of the many very different types we bring in, should delight the drinker. Gone are the days when everyone grabbed a box off the shelf based on price alone. Some will still do that, of course, but the modern tea drinker has elevated standards. How can you tell if tea is high quality? By the wonderful aroma and the superb flavour – it’s as simple as that.
